April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM)
By Rachel DePalma | Certified Advocate
April is recognized as Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), a time dedicated to raising public awareness about sexual violence and educating communities on how to prevent it. The National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC) leads this initiative, providing resources and coordinating efforts nationwide.
Understanding the Prevalence of Sexual Violence
Sexual violence remains a significant issue in the United States. According to the NSVRC:• Over 53% of women and over 29% of men have reported experiencing contact sexual violence in their lifetime. • More than 1 in 4 non-Hispanic Black women (29%) have been raped during their lifetime. • 1 in 3 Hispanic women (34.8%) reported unwanted sexual contact in their lifetime. • More than 4 in 5 American Indian and Alaska Native women (84.3%) have experienced violence in their lifetime.
These statistics highlight the pervasive nature of sexual violence across different communities and the urgent need for comprehensive prevention and support strategies.
The Role of NSVRC in Combating Sexual Violence
Established in 2000 by the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape, the NSVRC serves as a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing and preventing sexual violence. The center offers a wealth of resources, including research, tools, and training for advocates working on the frontlines to end sexual harassment, assault, and abuse. Their work emphasizes that ending sexual violence also requires addressing intersecting forms of oppression such as racism and sexism.
Sexual Assault Awareness Month 2025: "Together We Act, United We Change"
The theme for SAAM 2025 is "Together We Act, United We Change." This campaign underscores the power of collective action in preventing sexual abuse, assault, and harassment. It calls on individuals, communities, and organizations to unite in creating safe environments and fostering a culture of respect and equality.
How You Can Get Involved
There are several ways to participate in SAAM and contribute to the prevention of sexual violence:• Educate Yourself and Others: Utilize resources from the NSVRC to learn about sexual violence and share this knowledge within your community.• Support Survivors: Listen to and believe survivors, and connect them with local support services.• Promote Safe Environments: Advocate for policies and practices that foster safety and respect in workplaces, schools, and other community spaces.• Participate in Events: Engage in local and national events organized for SAAM to show solidarity and raise awareness.By coming together during Sexual Assault Awareness Month and beyond, we can work towards a future free from sexual violence.
