5 Ways to Practice Discernment on Social Media to Identify Manipulative People and Avoid a Parasocial Trauma Bond
By Rachel DePalma | Certified Advocate
Practicing discernment on social media is crucial for protecting yourself from manipulative individuals and avoiding unhealthy parasocial relationships, which can lead to emotional harm. Especially for survivors of domestic violence and abuse. To avoid falling into parasocial trauma bonds and identify manipulative individuals on social media, it's essential to practice discernment. Here are five strategies to help you do that:
1. Evaluate Consistency vs. ContradictionsPay close attention to whether someone's messaging, tone, or behavior is consistent over time. Manipulative individuals may frequently contradict themselves, present conflicting viewpoints, or shift their persona to fit different narratives. Inconsistency in how they present themselves or their values can be a red flag.
2. Look for Emotional Manipulation TechniquesManipulative people often use emotional tactics to create dependency or loyalty. Be aware of behaviors such as guilt-tripping, playing the victim, love-bombing, or excessively flattering followers. These techniques can make you feel obligated to engage or defend them, fostering an unhealthy attachment.
3. Assess Their Reaction to DisagreementPeople with manipulative tendencies often react poorly to criticism or disagreement. If they become defensive, aggressive, or attempt to discredit or shame those who challenge them, it indicates an unwillingness to engage in healthy discourse. A genuine person should be open to feedback, while manipulators may resort to gaslighting or turning the blame onto others.
4. Examine How They Cultivate LoyaltyBe cautious if someone is overly invested in making their followers feel “special” or “chosen,” which can lead to an unhealthy parasocial attachment. This can involve exclusive content, favoritism, or vague promises of personal connection. Genuine influencers or personalities typically set clear boundaries with their audience and avoid excessive emotional dependency on followers.
5. Fact-Check Their Claims and PersonaManipulative people often exaggerate their achievements, expertise, or knowledge to gain authority and trust. Take time to fact-check claims or look for reputable sources that confirm or deny what they are saying. If their statements feel far-fetched or designed to manipulate your perception, consider that they might be constructing a false persona or narrative to attack their victims for personal gain.
By practicing these discernment techniques, you can better protect yourself from developing unhealthy emotional connections with manipulative people on social media.
